ニホンイサンマークRemains of the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Guard Antiaircraft Battery on Mt. Tajima

It was around 1938 when a full-fledged antiaircraft battery was built on Mt. Yumihari (Navy called it Mt. Tajima). At first, it was equipped with two 3rd-year-type (1914) 8cm antiaircraft guns, a sound locator, and a Sperry-model 90-cm searchlight. There were no big changes even after the Pacific War started. But, the deployment of the U.S. Army’s Boeing B-29 strategic bombers in the Chinese continent in 1944 changed the situation. The battery was strengthened significantly and eventually was equipped with a Mk.41 antiaircraft fire control radar for the first time in Japan in addition to six Type98 (1938) 10cm antiaircraft guns. As an up-to-date battery, it fired 14 times (139 shootings) based on the radar during the Sasebo Air Raid on June 29, 1945.
