日本遺産ロゴ Korobi-Ishi Reservoir

転石貯水池

This is a water supply facility completed in 1928 as a part of the 3rd Navy water supply expansion plan and Sasebo’s first concrete gravity dam. The reservoir was designed by Mr. Noburu Yoshida, a Navy engineer who also designed the wireless transmission station in Hario. Though the dam is concrete-made, its exposed-aggregate finish and chipping give it an atmosphere of a stone-made building. At first a 900,000-ton-capacity dam was planned across the upstream of the Ainoura river under the 3rd Navy water supply expansion plan. But the plan was abandoned from the view point of securing irrigation water and the Navy instead decided to build a 230,000-ton-capacity one across the Kubo-Nita river, a tributary of the Ainoura river. Since the initial plan was abandoned, the Navy had no choice but to stop its fresh water supply to Sasebo city.
