The Imperial Japanese Navy Maehata Ammunition Facility Second Powder Magazine

前畑火薬庫第二火薬庫

This building was built when the Maehata Ammunition Facility was established in May 1888. It is the oldest brick building in Sasebo city and remains in the same condition as when it was built. At first, the facility consisted of only two magazines and belonged to the Weapon Warehouse section which stored weapons manufactured in Tokyo. As the Imperial Japanese Navy’s power expanded, the number of magazines increased accordingly and the facility became its present form in around 1940. In those days, the second magazine area was used as the arsenal’s powder charging factory where the powder stored in the ammunition facility was put into shells. The road and the cut in front of the facility were constructed when a railroad track was laid to the facility in 1933.
