Today, the withdrawal of recommendation of a UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage candidate “Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki” including Kuroshima Church was approved by the Cabinet.
It is really regrettable because we have strived so far toward the registration in 2016, in collaboration with Nagasaki Prefecture and other local authorities (Cities and Towns), as well as local residents in Kuroshima and people involved.
I have heard, however, that this withdrawal and restarting to discuss and inspect with ICOMOS are a sure and shorter way toward registration as World Heritage. I think that the Government chose a best choice.
We will continue to make a full effort, in collaboration with Government, Nagasaki Prefecture, Kumamoto Prefecture, and other concerned local authorities (Cities and Towns), for the purpose of its registration of “Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki”. We would be grateful for you citizens' continued understanding and cooperation.
Norio Tomonaga
Mayor of Sasebo
