Lookout in Kotohira Shinto Shrine

金刀比羅神社の監視哨

Kotohira Shinto Shrine used to be on the Tategami peninsula jutted into Sasebo Bay, but moved to the current location in 1890 as a result of the establishment of Sasebo Naval Station. This was a key place overlooking Navy’s brick warehouses and arsenal facilities. A grid-shaped underground dugout called ‘Rengo-bu-Suido Tunnel’ was constructed during the last stage of the Pacific War. A cylindrical reinforced-concrete-made structure that can be seen from here is about 1 meter in diameter and has eyeholes on the surface in three directions as well as a door. Judging from the architectural style, this mysterious structure is considered to be a lookout that monitored the approach of enemy aircraft. But no records about this have been left and it was not on the taking-over list submitted to the Allies side after the end of the war.
