Regarding the relocation and return of the Maebata Ordinance Facility, an announcement was made today at the Japan-U.S. Joint Committee, that agreement had been reached regarding the layout plan of facilities at the Hariojima Ordinance Facility, which will serve as the relocation site for the Maebata Ordinance Facility that has been under coordination between Japan and the United States.
It has been 14 long years since the basic agreement reached at the Japan-U.S. Joint Committee in January 2011, I consider this new agreement between Japan and the United States as a significant step forward toward the relocation. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all government officials of Japan and the United States who contributed their great efforts.
Today’s agreement greatly contributes to the realization of the “port segregation” that we promote, and I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Mr. Yozo Kaneko, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense, local members of the National Diet, as well as related Diet members, members of the Sasebo City Council, members of the Nagasaki Prefectural Assembly, Nagasaki Prefecture, Mr. Norio Tomonaga, the former Mayor of Sasebo City and many others for their continued support.
I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Egami and Hario district councils, as well as related organizations and members including neighborhood associations, fisheries cooperative of southern, Hario and Sasebo City areas, for their continued understanding and cooperation despite the difficult decisions involved regarding the relocation of the ordinance facility.
I believe that the relocation project will realistically and significantly progress henceforth, and various adjustments will become necessary.
As Sasebo City, we continue to request the national government to prioritize the safety of residents and above all else, and that it provides further passport for regional revitalization and community development in recognition of our cooperation and contributions to national defense.
I sincerely ask for continued support and cooperation of all citizens and stakeholders to achieve the early relocation and return of the Maebata Ordinance Facility.
Daisuke Miyajima
Sasebo Mayor
