Mayor’s comment about news of passing away of Sasebo-city international goodwill honorary citizen Sister Mary Clement.

November 20, 2020

I was greatly grieved to learn of the death of the Sister Mary Clement who is Sasebo-city international goodwill honorary citizen on November 18, 2020.  On behalf of Sasebo-City organization and all the citizens, I wish to express our deepest sympathy and the heartfelt condolences.

When Sister Mary Clement served as the 2nd principal of Seiwa Joshi Gakuin High School, she had started to visit her mother country Australia, leading her school chorus group and citizen’s chorus group. Especially, she has supported home stay and schooling in Coffs Harbour City.

Thereafter, the circle of the citizen’s exchange has been expanded even outside the high school. Because an exchange among the citizens in between both cities became active since then, we had praised that she had greatly contributed to an international exchange of this city and awarded a title of an international goodwill honorary citizen to her.

Since Sister Mary Clement had also contributed to a sister city conclusion between Coffs Harbour City and Sasebo City in 1987 including a start of Sasebo Japan-Australia Society in 1983, language study by young people, music and a sports exchange in both cities also continue now, and are almost performed.

A death of Sister Mary Clement is big loss for Sasebo-City and is the deep grief.

I will wish for rest in peace from the bottom of my heart while wishing the day when everybody's grief of your family is healed up even one day earlier, remembering great achievements of Sister Mary Clement.

Norio Tomonaga
Mayor of Sasebo
