Mayor’s comment on the “Kyushu-Nagasaki Specified Integrated Resort (IR) Area Development Plan”

Today, we received a report from Nagasaki Prefecture that the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has notified us that the “Kyushu-Nagasaki Specified IR Area Development Plan” pursuant to Article 9, Paragraph 11 of the Act on Development of Specified Integrated Resort Districts will not be approved. It was also published on the website of the Japan Tourism Agency, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Nagasaki Prefecture, the local business community, and the City Council have worked together over many years to attract IR as a catalyst for regional revitalization not only in Sasebo City and Nagasaki Prefecture, but also in Kyushu. The decision not to approve the IR project is truly regrettable.

As a regional IR that revitalize the local, Sasebo City’s efforts have been carried out with the support and cooperation of many others involved, including members of the Diet, members of the Nagasaki Prefectural Council, Members of the Sasebo City Council, Huis Ten Bosch Corporation, Kyushu Economic Federation, Sasebo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Eastern District Local Government Liaison Council.

We will examine the details of the review by the national government, confirm the details with Nagasaki Prefecture (the applicant), and with the Tourism Agency and other related organizations, and will take the necessary measures as a city. We deeply appreciate the continued understanding and support of all citizens and related parties for the city government.
