Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Station Triumphant Return Memorial Hall (Sasebo Citizens’ Cultural Hall)

Japan joined World War I, which broke out in 1914, as a member of the Allies. In 1917, the Second Special Squadron, most of the ships belonged to Sasebo Naval Station, was dispatched to the Mediterranean and carried out unprecedented escort duties for anti-submarine operations. The squadron’s self-sacrificing operations were highly appreciated and a medal was awarded by the King of Britain. The Japanese fleet’s great success was a source of immense pride to Sasebo citizens and they came up with the idea of building a triumphant return memorial hall. Mr. Shujiro Suganuma, the founder of former Saikai Junior High School (current Saikai Gakuen High School), chaired the construction committee and the construction costs were covered by donations from the prefectures under the jurisdiction of Sasebo Naval Station. The interior was quite exquisite featuring a plastered wall, and the ceiling and the outer wall adopted a classical design with fine decorations. The hall was mainly used for naval events.
