The Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Station
Tategami Weapon Warehouses
(Tategami Brick Warehouses)

The current location of the Tategami west warehouses of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Repair and Supply Facility used to be the Imperial Japanese Navy’s warehouses, which were built during the first phase of the Sasebo Naval Station construction, to receive and store weapons manufactured in Tokyo.
There remain nine brick-made warehouses including ones for shells and small arms that were completed in 1888 and one for bullets completed in 1913. It is interesting to see the transition of the construction styles from brick-made warehouses to reinforced brick-made ones. Since Sasebo Naval Station’s main assignment was to supply fleet ships with various items, many large brick warehouses were built to meet the Navy’s increasing requirements. Each type of item was stored in different locations. At the Tategami area, weapons including cannons were stored.
