Remains of the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Station Headquarters (The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Sasebo District Headqurters)

Sasebo Naval Station opened in July 1889. It was responsible for defending the west sea region including the Korean Peninsula, the Nansei islands and Taiwan. Its brick-made headquarters building presented a dignified appearance as a symbol of Sasebo Naval Station. During the Sasebo Air Raid in June 1945, the headquarters office and many other buildings in the compound were burned down, but the former Communications Command building (current Communications Command building), the former Weather Observation Station (current Criminal Investigation Command building), the former underground Air Defense Command Post, and the gateposts still remain.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Sasebo District Headquarters has been playing a key role in keeping peace and independence of Japan since it was relocated here in 1968.
