Remains of the Imperial Japanese Army Sasebo Fortress Marude-Yama Battery

Marude-yama battery was built in 1901 as a part of Sasebo Fortress to defend Sasebo naval port. This battery was designed to become the most powerful one in Sasebo Fortress for exchanging fire with approaching enemy vessels for a long time. It was equipped with four Krupp-model 24cm cannons (spoils of the first Sino-Japanese War) and four 28cm howitzers. Also built was an observation station for the howitzers. During the Russo-Japanese War and World War I, the battery stayed alert at all times, but never experienced actual fighting and the 24cm cannons were removed in 1937. The 28cm howitzers were used as training guns for a while and removed after the end of the Pacific War.
