役夫死者の碑

In January 1887, the construction work for the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Station was started. It was a large-scale project which tore down a mountain and reclaimed the nearby coastal areas. The scale and the difficulty of the construction were described in ‘Naval Port Construction Counting Song’ popular in those days. As many as 41 workers lost their lives in the leveling construction of Mt. Konpira, which was located on the place where the Sasebo Naval Station Headquarters office was built later. (current Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Sasebo District Headquarters) The monument was erected in June 1888 to honor the spirits of 41 workers who had lost their lives during the construction.
