Remains of the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Guard Air Battle Command Post on Mt. Tajim

旧佐世保海軍警備隊田島岳空戦指揮所跡

In 1938, an air defense command post was established on Mt. Tajima and an antiaircraft battery was built on nearby Mt. Yumihari. They were collectively called ‘Mt. Tajima Battery’ by the Navy. The air defense command post was directly connected with Sasebo naval air station and Omura naval air station by telephone, and also played a role as an air battle command post. In December 1942, a new air defense command post was established in the basement of the Sasebo Naval Station headquarters building. Although almost all functions were transferred to the new command post, the function as an air battle command post remained and played an important role to defend the airspace of Sasebo naval port using its special outlook equipped with a radar. There still remain a foundation of the barracks, a basement-style command post site, and a gun platform for a Vickers-model 40-mm machine gun.
