National Important Cultural Property No.3 Wireless Transmission Tower

The wireless transmission towers of Hario Transmission were built to support the antennas, which transmit radio wave signals, and they consists of three (3) reinforced concrete towers of 450ft (137.16m) in height. Three (3) tower are placed such that they make an equilateral triangle 303.3m on a side. The construction of No. 1 and No. 2 tower started in October 1918, and another construction of No. 3 tower started in December 1919. The construction of No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 tower completed in April, May and July 1922 respectively. The cost for the construction at that time was Japanese Yen936,822.-, which is almost equivalent to the current cost of Japanese Yen15 billion. Noburu Yoshida, an engineer of Sasebo Naval Station Base Architectural Department, was in charge of the design and supervision of the project.

The photo (1) was taken during the foundation construction period, and shows the arrangement of steel bars and the structure of the scaffolding in the tower. The concrete-casting work proceeded 4 feet 6 inches (1.3716 m) per day, and this casting work was repeated 100 times to complete the construction work up to the top of the tower. As shown in Photo (2), the scaffolding, a wooden tower like structure, was built inside of the tower, and form works and suspended scaffolds were hooked on it so as to be hanged outside of the tower.
