Remains of Radar for Antiaircraft Guns Battery on Mt. Tajima

田島岳高射砲台電波探信儀跡

This outdoor stage used to be a radar site for the battery. It had a Mk.41 radar, the first surface-to-air radar developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy, at the center. The mortar-shaped terrain blocked the reflected waves from mountains, buildings, the sea surface and the ground surface. Though Japanese Navy radar technology was behind that of the Allies, it succeeded in assembling a prototype radar based on a captured Allies’ one in summer 1943. After practical trials in Japan and Rabaul, the Navy’s first radar in Japan was equipped in the antiaircraft guns battery on Mt. Tajima in November 1944. During the Sasebo Air Raid in June 1945, 14 shootings using the radar were recorded.
