The Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Defense Nakiri Jetty on Kuroshima Island

旧佐世保防備隊黒島名切突堤

This Nakiri-no-Hama beach was used from old times as a boarding point by the people of Nakiri village. When Kuroshima Catholic Church was built, construction materials including a large number of bricks were landed here and carried to the construction site by believers through narrow mountain paths.
In 1911, when the range of Sasebo naval port was expanded, Kuroshima island became the outermost part of it. In 1914, a stone jetty was constructed for the Kuroshima south battery built in the Tashiro area. But it was destroyed by a typhoon in 1924 and the current one was reconstructed. The road leading to the jetty was completed with the physical labor contribution called ‘Bu’ of the people of the Nakiri district. The construction started in 1957 and ended 6 years later. Only hoes were used except when blasting rocks.
