Remains of the Imperial Japanese Army Sasebo Fortress Barracks at Umagawa

旧陸軍佐世保要塞馬川兵舎跡

Only a few guards were assigned in peacetime at three batteries on the Tawaraga-Ura peninsula respectively, but during drills or wartime, hundreds of soldiers were deployed. To accommodate these service members, three one-story wooden barracks and a commissioned officers’ lodging house were built at a convenient location to each battery in 1901. All batteries were abandoned by 1937 except for some which were used as training batteries. Since a new Umagawa battery used as a training facility for a new shooting device was built in 1934, Umagawa barracks were used until the end of the Pacific War. Though the barracks were dismantled after the war, some structures such as brick-made foundations, gateposts, and wells still remain.
