旧佐世保海軍警備隊宇久島特設見張所跡

Special lookouts were established on Uku-jima island, Fukue-jima island, and Meshima island of the Danjo islands to keep an eye on approaching enemy airplanes from mainland China after the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out. Special outlooks were divided into seven categories, Ko, Otsu, Hei, Tei, Bo, Ki, Shin, according to the difference of equipment. One on Uku-jima island was categorized as Ko, which had both wire and wireless transmission facilities. But as a result of the installation of a surface-to-air radar by December 1943, it was upgraded to the Bo category. Eventually the number of the Mk.113 radar with a range of 200 km was increased to four. The record says that all enemy airplanes’ approaches were detected by these radars during the last stage of the Pacific War.
