Remains of the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Guard Nakiri Battery on Kuroshima Island

旧佐世保海軍警備隊黒島名切砲台跡

The construction of several coastal artillery batteries and bases for the Kamikaze boat attack units started in April 1945, near the end of the Pacific War, in preparation for the coming decisive battles in mainland Japan. As a part of it, Nakiri battery and Tashiro battery were built on Kuroshima Island. Nakiri battery was equipped with an Armstrong-model 15cm gun and two Type96 (1936) 25mm machine guns. The Navy planned to attack enemy vessels trying to intrude into this area with these batteries, the mines laid in the sea around Kuroshima Island and the Kamikaze special boat attack units deployed at Yadake-ura in Kosaza. Both batteries had a dug-in fortification style to increase the survival rate. Fortunately, the Pacific War ended before the mainland battles started. Ttherefore, these batteries were not used in actual fighting.
