Remains of the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Guard Tashiro Battery Power Plant on Kuroshima Island

旧佐世保海軍警備隊黒島田代砲台発電所跡

In May 1945, batteries were built at the Nakiri and the Tashiro areas on Kuroshima Island in preparation for the coming decisive battles in mainland Japan. This facility was a power plant to supply the Tashiro battery with electricity. It was a cave-style reinforced-concrete facility with an air-blast-proof wall at the entrance. After the Pacific war, the facility was transferred to the local community and started to supply local people with electricity for the first time in history. As the generator was a water-cooling type, it had an adjoining water tank. It is said children washed their bodies with the tank water after playing in the sea.

There is a memorial monument called Sankai-Banrei-To (a tower for all spirits in the three worlds) in the adjacent area, where many human bones which had been found during the construction were buried. Rumor said that they were pirates’ bones or ones of Christians who had been executed during the Christianity persecution period.
