Remains of the Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Guard Mt. Bandake Antiaircraft Guns Battery on Kuroshima Island

旧佐世保海軍警備隊黒島番岳高射砲台跡

This battery was built to defend the outermost part of Sasebo naval port. In 1937, two 3rd-year-type (1914) 8cm antiaircraft guns, a sound locator, and a Sperry-model 90cm searchlight were installed.

There used to be an improved German Electro Acoustic-model sound locator in this low place. It was designed to detect the exact location of aircraft by catching their sounds and to be soon connected with the searchlight. In March 1944, its antiaircraft guns were moved to Takadake antiaircraft guns battery in Ainoura. And in July 1944, a Type96 (1936) 150cm searchlight was moved into this battery. Until the end of the Pacific war, this battery was used as a lookout and searchlight facility without any antiaircraft guns.
