Lookout at Kamishima-Cho

神島町の監視哨

This cylindrical reinforced-concrete structure is 1.5 meter in diameter and has four eyeholes in four directions and a door. Judging from the architectural style and similar structures seen in other places, it must be a lookout to monitor approaching enemy aircraft. This place was very close to the border with the Naval Arsenal and commanded a view of its facilities. We can see the shape of Mt. Akasaki and ‘1.5 kilometers’ in Kanji written in chalk by the window on the wall facing the sea. Considering that, it is no doubt that it was installed to observe not only aircraft but also something else. No records about this mysterious structure have been left and it was not on the taking-over list submitted to the Allies side after the end of the Pacific war. Similar concrete-made lookouts also remain in Maehata ammunition facility, Kotohira Shinto shrine, and Akasaki fuel facility.
