Remains of the Imperial Japanese Army Sasebo Fortress Headquarters

After Sasebo port was designated as a naval port and Sasebo Naval Station was established, the Imperial Japanese Army Sasebo Fortress was founded to defend the port and its related facilities, and its headquarters office was built at Kogetsu-cho. Along with the foundation of Sasebo Fortress, Sasebo city and its surrounding areas were designated as a fortified zone and various activities began to be regulated by the fortified zone law. Especially taking photos was strictly regulated. If mountain ranges were seen on a photo, the photo had to be retouched to prevent the height of the mountains from being known. During peace time, the headquarters was busy with paperwork such as photo censorship and acceptance of applications. Its original duty to control the fortress was carried out only during wartime. In 1936, Sasebo Fortress was integrated into Nagasaki Fortress and its headquarters was closed.
