Old Sasebo Wireless Transmission Facility (Hario Transmission Station) is located in Hoario Island, which separates Sasebo-bay and Omura-bay, in the southwestern part of Sasebo-city. This is one of the long-wave radio transmission facilities which was constructed by the Imperial Japanese Navy as an infrastructure for the telecommunication network in Japan and its vicinity to deal with increasing importance of wireless communication associated with the development of the modern society. The construction of the facility started in November 1918 and completed in November 1922.
Hario Transmission Station is a concrete construction in the early stage of the modernized Japan, and has a very high value in the Japanese civil engineering history, since it is the only existing long-wave telecommunication facility in Japan nowadays. Also, it is a significant achievement in the Japanese industrial history, since it represents the highest level of concrete technology in Taisho Era (1912-1926). As the core part of the wireless transmission facility including wireless towers and the transmission room, the long-wave telecommunication equipment is preserved properly. Therefore, the facility including the surrounding area has been preserved as an important cultural property.
