Soto dam

相当水源地

The reservoir was formed by Soto dam, which was built in 1944 across the Muta river as a part of the 5th Navy water supply expansion plan.  This was the last reservoir constructed by the Imperial Japanese Navy.  Soto dam is a concrete gravity dam, 34m high and 150m long, containing 400,000 tons of water.  During the wartime, 250 U.S. prisoners of war (POWs) were mobilized due to a labor shortage and 53 of them lost their lives because of heavy labor and dangerous rush work. In 1956, a memorial monument in the motif of a water pipe was erected by the side of the dam by Sasebo city to honor all workers who died in water-supply-related constructions including those POWs.
