Remains of Ammunition Storage for Antiaircraft Guns Battery on Mt. Tajima

田島岳高射砲台弾薬庫跡

This building used to be a shell storage for the antiaircraft guns on Mt. Tajima and is believed to have been completed in around 1938. The shell was a combination of a warhead with a time fuse and a cartridge filled with gun powder for shooting. They were stored upright on wooden shelves. Although the facility also had cave-style shell storages, they were plugged up after the war. The building was made with gray bricks called Kosai Renga. Kosai Renga was a kind of brick developed at the Yawata Steel Works in around 1907 using glass-like slag, a by-product separated from raw ore. They were used a lot in the Kyushu region because they were less expensive and more durable than regular bricks.
