The Imperial Japanese Navy Sasebo Naval Boot Camp

This building was completed in 1937 as the 8th barracks of Sasebo Naval Boot Camp (Sasebo Kaihei-Dan). Sasebo Naval Boot Camp was established in 1889 with the main facilities such as the headquarters building and two brick-made barracks. Its main purposes were to enlist new recruits and provide them with military training. As the Imperial Japanese Navy expanded rapidly, its facilities were improved accordingly to meet the Navy’s requirements. Eventually, as many as ten barracks were built.
The 8th barracks is a simple reinforced-concrete three-story building influenced by modernist architecture which was popular in the 1930s. An L-shaped restroom facility was attached to the main building. One remarkable feature of the building is its explosion-proof structure with thick beams and columns.
