日本遺産ロゴ Remains of Antiaircraft Gun Platform on Mt. Tajima

田島岳高射砲台砲座跡

This facility used to be a battery which was completed in November 1944 and it was equipped with a Type98 (1938) 10cm antiaircraft gun to intercept enemy aircraft. The surrounding caves were used as powder magazines and designed to be able to quickly reload no matter what direction the antiaircraft gun faced. The gun was first developed as a shipboard artillery one in 1938 and used on the Akizuki-class destroyers known as air defense destroyers. It was characterized by its long barrel (6.5 meters) and its maximum horizontal firing range was 18,700 meters and maximum vertical firing range was 13,300 meters. The rate of fire was 19 rounds per minute (some documents say 15 rounds). It boasted the world’s highest-level performance at that time.
